FERDINAND — South Spencer remained unbeaten Friday after a thrilling 56-53 win over Forest Park in PAC boys basketball.
With the victory, the Rebels improved to 6-0 against the Rangers under coach Matt Britton with two of those wins coming in Class 2A sectional play.
After trailing early, South Spencer used a quick 6-0 scoring run to take a 13-7 advantage before closing the first quarter with a five-point lead at 15-10.
Forest Park pulled within two points at the start of the second but the Rebels answered with five unanswered points to get the margin back to seven at 23-16.
The Rangers went into the locker room at halftime with some momentum, scoring the final five points of the half to get into the break down just two points at 23-21.
Three-pointers from Carter Hinson and Luke Hauser starting the third allowed the Rangers to take their first lead of the night at 27-26 before South Spencer answered with another 6-0 run.
Reid Howard gave the Rangers the lead back moments later at 35-34 on a three and Howard closed the period with a buzzer-beating shot to give Forest Park a two-point edge going into the fourth.
Cale Donoho would change the fortunes for the Rebels over the final eight minutes of the game.
The Rebels opened the fourth with a 7-0 run and five of those points came from Donoho, allowing South Spencer to take a six-point advantage at 46-40.
Forest Park cut the deficit to one point at 52-51 with 15 seconds left but Ty Brown and Donoho took care of business at the free throw line to seal the victory.
Donoho paced South Spencer’s offense with 21 points, which included four-made three-pointers and a 5 for 7 mark at the free throw line. Brown added 15 points on five made field goals and a 5 for 7 mark from the charity stripe while Kaydin Duvall and Landon Wells added nine and eight points, respectively.
For the Rangers, Howard had 14 points and Jace Berg contributed 13.
Saturday, the Rebels dominated Tell City 67-17 as four South Spencer players finished in double figures.
Wells had a game-high 16 points and nearly outscored the Marksmen himself.
Donoho, Brown and Duvall all accounted for 12 points apiece.
The Rebels led 26-2 after the first eight minutes before taking a 48-6 advantage into halftime. In all, South Spencer hit eight three-pointers with Wells making four.
Isaac Lindauer scored the only basket for Tell City in the first and paced the Marksmen offensively with eight points.
South Spencer improved to 13-1 overall and 5-0 in the PAC with back-to-back victories over Forest Park and Tell City. The Rebels host North Posey Friday at 7 p.m.
