HUNTINGBURG — Southridge scored four runs in the first inning and had another crooked number in the third and the Raiders beat South Spencer 12-2 in softball on Monday.
Emily Ferguson singled and Camryn Nalley walked to put two runners on in the opening frame. After Ferguson was caught stealing, Maddux Marshall hit a two-run home run to give the Raiders a 2-0 advantage.
The next batter, Ally Buening, reached on a hit by pitch and later scored on an error in left field to make it a three-run contest before another error during Hannah Polley’s at bat made it 4-0.
South Spencer got a run back in the second when Kali Wink led off with a double and scored on a fielder’s choice, pulling the Rebels within three. However, Southridge countered with a Nalley RBI single in the bottom half.
Abigail Raaf doubled with two outs in the third and scored a batter later on sGrace Madison’s RBI single that made it 5-2.
The Raiders seized complete control in the fourth.
Molly Schwartz’s RBI double extended the margin to four and a base hit and ground out scored three more to give Southridge a seven-run lead at 9-2.
Back-to-back walks in the fourth both scored on an error that gave Southridge an 11-2 edge and in the fifth, Nalley hit an RBI double off the top the fence to end the game early with the mercy rule.
With Kaylee Schmitt still absent from the circle due to injury, Rebels coach Justice Taylor is using two freshmen in Wink and Alexis Cecil.
Wink started the game and went 2 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs—six earned—on six hits and a walk. Cecil came on in relief and went 1 2/3 innings, giving up four runs—two earned—on four hits and three walks. Wink took the loss.
“We’re trying to get our two freshmen enough pitches in games where they’re starting to progress, they’re getting better each and every game,” Taylor said. “It just takes time.
“Alexis picked up pitching at the beginning of the season, Kali hasn’t pitched since fifth grade.”
The Raiders also used two pitchers with Buening and Ferguson in the circle. Buening earned the win with a three inning outing that surrendered just two earned runs on six hits and two walks. Ferguson allowed two hits and a walk while striking out three.
Nalley finished 3-for-3 for Southridge with two RBIs and Marshall was 1-for-3 with a run scored and RBI.
For South Spencer, Madison went 1-for-3 with and RBI and Wink finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.
“We are starting to put hits together, if we could just get our bunts down, that would be tremendous,” Taylor said. “We’ve been focusing on small ball lately instead of big power hits, we’re not a power-hitting team.”
