FERDINAND — Forest Park had a fast start and held off a late South Spencer rally to beat the Rebels 7-3 in PAC baseball on May 2.
The Rangers broke the scoreless game in the second inning with a five-run frame.
Jaxon Lueken singled and Tyler Fetter walked before Bryson Partenheimer reached on an error at first base that allowed both runners to score, giving Forest Park a 2-0 lead.
Another error at second base extended the inning and after a pitch hit Trevor Berg to load the bases, Reid Howard cleared the bases with an RBI triple that extended the Ranger advantage to five runs.
The score remained 5-0 until the sixth when the Rebels loaded the bases. Ty Brown singled and Bryer Coomes walked with an out before Bryan Trone loaded the bases with two outs on a single.
Brown scored to make it 1-0 and an error on Mason Eble’s ground ball allowed Coomes and Trone to both score, cutting the deficit to two runs at 5-3.
However, Forest Park answered in the bottom half of the inning when Partenheimer and Sage Stout reached on back-to-back errors in the field. Partenheimer scored on Berg’s sacrifice fly and Stout came home on Keegan Abell’s RBI double to center, giving the Rangers a four-run cushion.
Clayton Weisheit retired the Rebels in order in the seventh, striking out the side.
Joel Bueltel earned the victory for Forest Park, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing two runs—one earned—on a hit and two walks. Bueltel struck out nine batters in his 90-pitch outing. Weisheit pitched 1 2/3 innings and surrendered an unearned run on a hit and struck out five.
Beau Heck took the loss for South Spencer, pitching five frames and giving up five unearned run on three hits and two walks. He also had three strikeouts. Coomes pitched in relief in the sixth and gave up two unearned runs on a hit and walk in his inning of work.
Howard finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs in the win for Forest Park and Stout was 1-for-3 with a run. Abell went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
For South Spencer, Brown and Trone were each 1-for-3 with a run scored.
South Spencer opened the week with a 16-2 loss to Reitz on May 1 and lost 7-0 to Princeton on Thursday, dropping the Rebels to 1-14 on the season.
The Rebels were scheduled to play New Albany, Evansville Memorial and Washington on Friday, Monday and Tuesday before playing at Evansville Christian on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
