FLOYDS KNOBS — Heritage Hills won a marathon baseball game on May 15, beating Floyd Central 5-3 in 11 innings.
Marcus Becher got the decisive inning started for the Patriots with a leadoff single and Peyton Gray follwoed with a double to put both he and Becher into scoring position. Becher scored on a wild pitch to give Heritage Hills a 4-3 lead and Colten Hopf’s sacrifice fly made it a two-run cushion.
The Highlanders threatened down to their final three outs when two runners reached base on an error and single but a fly out ended the threat.
Floyd Central took an early 2-0 lead in the first on a sacrifice fly and RBI single before the Patriots took advantage of a second inning error that allowed both Hopf and Colten Buntin to score after reaching on singles.
With the game tied at 2-2 in the second, Floyd Central retook the lead on a single but Heritage Hills found an equalizer in the third with an RBI single from Hopf. The score would remain the same until the 11th.
Luke Krzykowski earned the victory for Heritage Hills in relief after he pitched four innings and allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out one. Hopf started the game on the mound and went seven frames and surrendered three runs—one earned—on six hits. He walked one batter and struck out three.
Gray went 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs and Hopf finished 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs. Hopf was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.
Heritage Hills followed the victory up with a 13-7 loss to Evansville Memorial on Thursday before beating Evansville Christian 13-2 on Friday to improve to 12-14 on the season.
The Patriots were scheduled to play county rival South Spencer on Saturday but the game was canceled due to wet field conditions.
The Patriots were scheduled to close the regular season on Monday against Perry Central before opening the IHSAA Class 3A sectional against Southridge on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
