EVANSVILLE — Heritage Hills prevailed in a pitchers’ duel to beat Reitz 3-2 in the softball regular season opener Thursday.
Mia Kiegel earned the victory in the circle for the Patriots, pitching 4 1/3 innings while allowing one unearned run on three hits. She struck out four and walked one. Miriam Gordon pitched in relief, finishing the game and giving up one unearned run on two hits.
The Patriots loaded the bases in the first inning with nobody out after a lead-off double, single and walk but a fielder’s choice, strikeout and ground out ended the threat without a runner crossing the plate.
In the bottom half of the frame, Reitz had a lead-off walk from Riley Lawrence before a fielder’s choice put Katie Futrell at first. Futrell stole second and advanced to third on a ground out before scoring on a passed ball to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
The score remained that way until the third when Mayci Litherland led off with a single. She stole second and went to third after Emma Day’s single. An error in right field allowed Litherland to score, tying the game at 1-1.
Ally Schipp’s sacrifice fly scored Day and the Patriots led 2-1.
Sarah Day started the fifth with a base hit for the Patriots and she’d score on Schipp’s RBI groundout three batters later, extending the Heritage Hills advantage to two runs at 3-1.
Reitz threatened in the seventh when Ireland Guetling reached on a one-out error and scored on Kaci Sanders RBI single. Another error put the potential game-winning run on base before Futrell grounded into a game-ending double play.
Ella Ellerbrook took the loss for the Panthers, pitching three innings and allowing two unearned runs on four hits. She walked three batters and struck out one. Natalie Dillman pitched the final four frames and surrendered one earned run on three hits.
At the plate for Heritage Hills, Litherland finished 2 for 4 with a run and Emma Day was 2 for 3 with a run scored. For Reitz, Guetling was 2 for 3 with a run.
Heritage Hills improved to 1-0 with the victory. The Patriots were scheduled to play Northeast Dubois Friday, Mater Dei Saturday and Jasper Tuesday before hosting Washington today in Lincoln City at 5 p.m.
