LINCOLN CITY — Behind dominant pitching in the circle, Heritage Hills beat county rival South Spencer 9-0 in PAC softball on May 11.
Miriam Gordon and Mia Kiegel combined to shutout the Rebels.
Gordon earned the victory, pitching the first five innings and allowing six hits and striking out four batters.
Kiegel pitched the final two frames, striking out one.
The game was scoreless until the third inning when the Patriots broke through with a run after Ali Gardner doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a passed ball to make it 1-0.
In the fourth, Gordon hit a one-out single and Gardner’s base hit with two gone allowed Jenna McDowell to bat and she lined a single to center that scored both runs to extend the Heritage Hills’ advantage to three runs.
After the Rebels were retired in order in the fifth, the Patriots put the game away with a four-run inning.
Sarah Day singled leading off and Emma Day followed by reaching on a hit by pitch.
Mayci Litherland singled with an out to load the bases before a wild pitch gave the Patriots a 5-0 advantage.
An RBI ground out off the bat of Liz Gogel scored Litherland and Gardner’s RBI single gave Heritage Hills a seven-run cushion.
Heritage Hills loaded the bases again in the sixth on three singles from Sarah Day, Emma Day and Litherland.
Gordon’s RBI single gave the Patriots an 8-0 edge and Gogel’s run-producing hit capped the scoring and gave Heritage Hills a nine-run lead going into the seventh.
There, South Spencer was retired in order on three-consecutive ground outs.
Alexis Cecil took the loss for the Rebels.
She pitched all six innings and allowed nine runs — eight earned — on 16 hits and walk.
Sarah Day was 3-for-4 in the win and Emma Day finished 2-for-3 with two runs.
McDowell and Litherland each went 2-for-4 in the Patriots’ victory.
For the Rebels, Briley Burns and Emma Williams each went 2-for-3 but the rest of the South Spencer lineup combined to go 2-for-19.
With the victory, Heritage Hills improved to 15-7 on the season and the Patriots followed their win over the Rebels with a 16-1 victory over Hancock County in shortened game after Joe Asbury’s squad scored once in the first, 10 times in the second before adding five runs in the third.
South Spencer fell to 6-17 with the loss.
The Rebels were scheduled to play at Tell City on Tuesday before closing the regular season in Reo on Thursday against Perry Central at 5 p.m.
The Patriots were scheduled to play in the Daviess County (Ky.) tourney over the weekend before playing at Evansville Memorial and Tecumseh on Tuesday and Wednesday.
