WEST BADEN — A new West Baden vacation rental under construction goes to a special cause.
Paoli High School graduate Pat McElligott is building the hilltop attraction, which will offer a view of the iconic West Baden Springs Hotel dome, to raise funds that will help perpetuate a scholarship awarded in memory of a classmate.
McElligott, who lives in Monroe, Michigan, said last week the income from the vacation rental will sustain the annual $1,000 scholarship awarded to a graduating Paoli High School senior in memory of PHS Class of 1963 graduate and U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. John D. Cook.
The 21-year-old Cook was killed the Vietnam War June 13, 1966, in Quang Nam province.
McElligott said classmates established the scholarship about 10 or 11 years ago, and he hopes the rental income will continue to benefit the scholarship.
The Michigan real estate agent traveled down to West Baden last week to watch the construction progress. He anticipates the rental units will be ready for occupancy in late summer or early fall.
