ORLEANS — Johnny Calvin Baker, 78, of Orleans, Indiana departed this life at 5:20 PM on Friday, March 31, 2023 at the IU Health Bedford Hospital in Bedford, Indiana.

He was born May 11, 1944 in Morristown, TN, the son of Rufus and Georgia (Willis) Baker.

John was a member of the Paoli High School Class of 1962. During high school he was very proud to have worked at Plemmons Rexall Drugs on the square in Paoli. Upon graduation be began his career as a truck driver with Jack Penn of Penn Trucking then worked for his father-in-law Karl Hall at Hall Trucking-Commercial Motor Freight and later over the road with Smith Transfer.

In 1975, he bought Toliver Oil Products which he ran with his former wife Janie Baker, as Baker Oil Company. In 1980 he rebuilt Baker’s Eastside Service in Paoli, Indiana as the areas first self-service gas station.

John was a charter member of the Orleans Jaycees and a member of the Indiana Oil Marketers Assn., Indiana Trucking Assn., the Orleans Masonic Lodge 153, and the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

He is survived by his daughter, Shawn Baker of Crestview Hills, KY; a son, Johnny Baker, Sr. of Orleans; four grandsons, Johnny, Karl, Jack and Ike Baker; sisters, Martha Jackson of Salem, IN, Joyce (Mark) Newlin of Plainfield, IN; brothers, Rolf (Donna) Baker of Orleans, IN and George Baker of Salem, IN. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Clint and Tom Baker.

The funeral will be on Thursday, April 6, 2023 at 11 a.m. at the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Orleans, IN with Pastors Jared Hardin, Ralph Purkhiser, Thomas Bostic and Michael R. Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Orleans.

Friends are invited to the visitation at Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home, Orleans, IN, on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
