Holland Kiwanis Club

The Holland Kiwanis Club met at the Holland American Legion Thursday for their regular weekly meeting.

President Dana Peacock called the meeting to order. She reminded members of the upcoming Lincoln Division Club meeting at 1 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Dale.

Peacock noted that banners and signs for the upcoming Holland Kiwanis Gun and Knife Show are being prepared at the Doodlebug in Jasper. Once finished it will be important to immediately place them at designated areas.

Steve Satkamp introduced speaker of the day, Jim Meyer, who serves as Cass Township Trustee for the past 13 years. Meyer gave a brief history of past Cass Township Trustees.

He described the various duties of the trustee position which includes preparing a budget. He also noted that another of the jobs is assistance for the poor. During a recent year he had 40 requests from 21 different people. These approved requests resulted in helping 52 people. Meyer also noted that funding of the fire department is part of the job. He described the increase in cost of fire trucks and fire fighting equipment with the last fire truck costing approximately $260,000. The mowing of local cemeteries by the fire department is also the responsibility of the township trustee.

Meyer noted that his office is located in the Heitman house which is one of the oldest homes in Holland. The Heitman house was recently sold but his office will continue to be located in the building. A short question and answer session followed and with no further questions, President Peacock adjourned the meeting.
